Substance Use Support & Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Struggling with substance use doesn't mean you've failed — it means you're dealing with a complex medical condition that responds well to compassionate, evidence-based care. At Balanced Mind & Wellness, we provide non-judgmental support for adults managing opioid use disorder (OUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD), including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) as part of a comprehensive, whole-person care plan.
What is Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)?
MAT is the use of FDA-approved medication, combined with counseling and behavioral therapies, to manage the cravings and withdrawal symptoms that come with substance use disorder. For those with opioid use disorder, medication helps reestablish normal brain function, reduce substance cravings, and prevent relapse.
MAT is not "swapping one addiction for another" — it is a clinically proven, evidence-based approach that helps patients stabilize their lives, maintain recovery, and work toward long-term wellness.
Medications We May Use
For Opioid Use Disorder (OUD):
Buprenorphine (Suboxone) — reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms; can be prescribed by any practitioner with current DEA registration that includes the authority to prescribe Schedule III medications, as the X waiver requirement has been removed SAFE Project
Naltrexone (Vivitrol) — an opioid blocker that prevents opioids from affecting the body; can be taken as a daily oral medication or administered as a long-acting monthly injection.
For Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD):
Naltrexone
Other FDA-approved medications as clinically appropriate
What to Expect
Care at Balanced Mind & Wellness begins with a thorough psychiatric and medical evaluation to understand your history, current use, and goals for recovery. From there, your provider will work with you to determine whether MAT is appropriate, which medication fits your needs, and what a realistic treatment plan looks like.
MAT combines pharmacological treatment with behavioral treatment tailored to your unique needs — we coordinate with therapists, counselors, and other providers as part of a whole-person approach to your care.
Ongoing visits focus on monitoring your response to medication, adjusting your plan as needed, and supporting your progress at every stage of recovery.
Who We Can Help
We provide MAT support for adults who are:
Managing opioid use disorder in an outpatient setting
Seeking support for alcohol use disorder
Already stable on MAT and looking for ongoing medication management
In early recovery and working to prevent relapse
**If you are currently in acute withdrawal or require a higher level of care (such as inpatient detox or residential treatment), we will help connect you with the appropriate level of support before transitioning to outpatient MAT.
A Note on Stigma
The stigma around substance use can prevent patients from seeking the care they need — many report feeling weak, ashamed, or undeserving of support. At Balanced Mind & Wellness, we believe recovery is possible for everyone, and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You will be met with respect, privacy, and compassionate care — always.
Insurance & Cost
MAT medications and visits are covered by most major insurance plans. We accept Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim, Tufts, MassHealth, and United Health Care. Private pay options are also available. We encourage you to verify your behavioral health benefits before your first visit.
